Chichen Itza

After eleven years and eight visits to Cancun and the Mayan Riviera, I finally took a tour to the ruins of Chichen Itza...I now ask myself, why did I wait so long??? I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who has an interest in history, mathematics, science, engineering, architecture, etc. You cannot help but ask, "How did the Mayan's know so much and build such complex structures, so long ago?"
The ruins you will find were built between 600 A.D. and 1200 A.D. The city at it's largest population was the home to about 500,000 people. In the newer section you will find El Castillo, The Great Ball Court, and the Temple of the Warriors. The older section of the ruins includes the Las Monjas ('The Nunnery') and El Caracol, which is the observatory temple, along with a smaller ball court and other ruins. The key to this tour is stay with your tour guide. They will provide alot of information that you cannot get by walking the site by yourself.
Chichen Itza is located about 250 km west of Cancun, so plan to be gone most of the day. Wear comfortable walking shoes, cool clothes, and bring water and sunscreen. You are in the middle of a jungle, so yes it is hot and humid. Oh yeah! Don't forget your camera!! You will want to take many pictures.
